Happiness is a Choice – Even during Covid-19

Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. Viktor E. Frankl

Viktor Frank was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, and a Holocaust survivor, of Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, Kaufering and Türkheim. His book, "Man’s Search for Meaning" was written after his release from the death camp.

During the lock-down and as things slowly open up, hopefully, we are discovering the power of choice. As we discover choice, we discover freedom. It all comes down to how we look at things.

This summer, I am choosing happiness. Of course, with many travel restrictions and physical distancing measures in place, summer looks a little different. So, I am embracing fun ways to be a tourist in my backyard and community.

Here are some ideas you may want to include in your planning for the Summer of Covid-19.

  • Although many events and festivals are cancelled, backyard celebrations are still possible, even if you are limited to your immediate family or your family bubble.

  • Live performances can be replaced by bringing speakers or instruments out onto your patio.

  • Community barbecues can be swapped out for more intimate backyard meals.

  • Fireworks displays can be replaced with sparklers (your dog will thank you).

  • If you love getting outside, hiking different trails and searching for waterfalls is fun.

  • If camping trips are not possible, backyard camping might be a suitable alternative. Grab the sleeping bags and marshmallows, gather around a fire pit, and enjoy!

  • Virtual sightseeing offers another opportunity for exploration. For example, many online videos let you visit different cities and tourist attractions without leaving the comfort of your home. Research your community and beyond, and see what adventures you can discover.

I love the idea of ordering take out from a local business and finding a place in the community to eat outside. Recently, I read a friend's social media post of his evening at the drive-in movie theatre.

Is this summer you imagined? Probably not. But, is it a summer where you can have fun? Absolutely. Remember, you get to choose how you feel.

Me? I choose happiness.

And, if you have a little time for reading, pick up Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning."
